The specific and primary purpose for which the AMM was formed in 1968, is to establish and maintain a permanent association for research and study of the history, traditions, tools, modes of living, etc., of the trappers, explorers and traders known as the Mountain Men. Further purposes are to establish and maintain a permanent museum and research center and to provide a means for the dissemination of information related to our purposes and objectives; to provide a continuous program of living history; to teach the skills and help develop the abilities which were actually needed and used by the original Mountain Men; to help preserve our native wilderness and wildlife by teaching and practicing realistic conservation; to help establish brotherhood and trust between our members and to help our members find the deep affinity with nature that is a basic and necessary trait of all true Mountain Men.
Our members actively work with the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale, Wyoming, the Boy Scouts of America, Safari Club International, school systems, and other educational organizations in multitudes of ways to help preserve the heritage of the original Mountain Men who played a part to open up our outer frontier and explore much of our country, making the western expansion and settling possible. Our members also work with many of the conservation groups and with State and Federal organizations in many aspects of outdoor education and with hunter safety programs. AMM members recreate the western fur trade era of 1800 - 1840 by utilizing the clothing and the tools and by immersing themselves into the time period through "on the ground" activities. |
